ENOUGH

Many of us don’t struggle because we lack resources. We struggle because attention gets hijacked by the belief that there isn’t enough time, clarity, confidence, support, margin. That belief changes how we think, how we relate, and how we lead.
January tends to amplify this pattern.
What follows is a simple way to notice when scarcity thinking takes over and how to return to a more accurate, steadier sense of “enough.”

STORY: January has a way of making “enough” feel elusive.

STORY: ENOUGH
Happy New Year! (Or… happy “why do I suddenly feel behind?” season.)
January has a way of turning life into a scoreboard. One minute I’m sipping coffee, the next I’m scrolling through everyone’s shiny posts — travel pics, productivity streaks, crisp resolutions — and I’m spiraling.
My inner monologue gets loud fast:
Am I doing enough?
I don’t have enough money.
There’s never enough time!
I’m not confident enough
I’ll never have enough friends, motivation, hope, energy, resources, appreciation…
I end up spiraling into a scarcity mindset dominated by fear, anxiety, and comparison to others.
And just as I was quietly spiraling, one of the members of my most recent leadership circle asked for advice about a crisis at work. As I read the message, I saw all my own fears reflected in their message. It’s time to change the narrative.
Instead of “not enough”, imagine having enough. Actually, better yet, KNOW that there is enough. Here’s what to do step by step.
How to remember you are/have enough if you forget.
1. Complete this sentence: “Right now, I feel like there’s not enough ________.” If you want a list of possibilities, check out the Scarcity Inventory from the Conscious Leadership Group.
2. In general, how do you behave when you feel there’s not enough ________? For instance, when I feel there’s not enough time, I get anxious, busy, bossy, stuck in old habits, and inflexible.
3. Consider what it might mean to have more than enough (way too much), and how you might behave then. For example, when I have too much time on my hands, I get bored and start to fill my time with all sorts of busyness and distractions, which ironically makes me feel like there’s not enough time later.
4. We often feel like the listed things are limited in quantity. Yet, at a metaphysical level, the amount is infinite. Even the most measurable of these (time, money, resources, etc.) are flexible, stretchable, and limitless when you really, really think about it: a moment of awe can make time stand still, and $20 can feel like nothing to a tycoon yet absolutely everything to someone who's hungry and alone. In what ways might ________ be stretchable, or even infinite, instead of fixed?
5. Here is a fact: in this, present, now moment it is impossible for there to not be enough. When you are truly here in the present, the only things that exist are bodily sensations, thoughts in your mind, and your identity as you are today. Close your eyes and take 5 minutes to consider: what is actually here in this now moment?
Check in with your body.
Allow your thoughts about ________ come and go.
Consider the relationship between your identity and ________.
Whenever I pause to do this, I realize I have everything I need and am enough just as I am. Everything is perfect because it just is. Scarcity or excess is outside of me—past, future, or in others. When it’s just me right now, there is always enough.
6. Wherever you arrive with steps 1-5, can you accept yourself for being exactly as you are with exactly what you have right now?
Conclusion
If you remember only one thing from me, know this:
You are enough. Exactly as you are right now. The good and bad, the light and dark, the strengths and weaknesses, the abundance and scarcity, the gifts you bring and the fears you carry. All of it.
You have enough. Thinking that there’s “never enough”, or “more is better”, or “it’s just the way it is” are myths. These are comparisons to an unreal ideal — a comparison to the past, the future, or to someone else. What IS real is this present moment. And in this moment, you have enough.

GOING FURTHER:
Redding and surrounding area women leaders…Hope and I will continue to Women's Leadership Collective in 2026! We will be kicking off our first gathering in early February—just in time for the Chinese New Year!
Drawing on the symbolic transition from the Year of the Snake to the Year of the Horse, we’ll explore two distinct but complementary modes of leadership that many women recognize in their own lives and organizations.
Snake leadership- The Snake represents a season of discernment—careful observation, strategic thinking, shedding outdated identities, and gaining internal clarity. Many leaders have spent significant time in this mode over the past year: reassessing roles, priorities, relationships, and direction.
Horse leadership- The Horse represents a different leadership posture—movement, visibility, momentum, and making decisions with confidence, and allowing action to clarify direction. Not reckless action, but forward motion that comes from knowing enough to move.
You’re invited to join the conversation: Wednesday, February 4th 5pm-6:30pm Art Hunger Gallery, Market St. Downtown Redding Please RSVP HERE
Our annual, Heroine’s Journey Leadership Retreat (May 1–4, Mendocino, CA) creates the conditions for leaders to slow down enough to think clearly, reconnect with what matters, and return with greater capacity—not just new ideas.
Over four days, you’ll experience:
facilitated leadership conversations
Time in redwoods and along the coast
space for reflection, creativity, and integration
evenings in community with peers who don’t require translation
